What is Solar Walk?

Solar Walk - 3D Solar System Model is this week's iTunes free app of the week.  It's created by Vito Technology. Interestingly, Vito is associated with a group of family-friendly developers called Moms with Apps and they promote quality applications for families and kids.  This free app fits into the education category and gives users the ability to investigate the solar system we live in.  Solar Walk is compatible with the iPhone 3GS, 4, 4S and 5; iPod (3rd Generation to 5th Generation) and iPad.  It also requires iOS 4.3 or later.  Solar Walk is also fully optimized for the iPhone 5. Features:
  • Galaxy view: users can zoom out to view the entire galaxy.
  • Time machine: a neat feature where users can move to any date in time to see where the planets would be.
  • Movie collection: Solar Walk includes several educational videos such as why the solar eclipse happens.
  • Satellites: view real-time positions of Earth's satellites.
  • Locations: an arrow will display all of the current positions of planets, comets, asteroids, moons, etc.
  • Info: detailed information about all the planets including name, radius, distance to the sun, and more.
  • Mirroring: view Solar Walk wirelessly to an Apple TV 2.

What did you like about Solar Walk?

Solar Walk is this week's free app of the week from iTunes.  If you're a parent interested in teaching your children about the solar system, this is definitely the app for you (and it's free, you can't get better than that!).  I liked many aspects of this application including the ability to view the solar system in 3D.  Please note, to view the 3D mode, you will need a pair of cyan-red 3D glasses.  You can view Solar Walk in 3D mode on your iPad, iPod touch, iPhone and on your Apple TV 2 and it looks amazing.  I especially liked watching the planets move in real time.  Each planet has detailed information. For example, you can read up on the latest expedition to Mars and find out all sorts of neat information.  I also like how Planet is included, even though it's not technically considered part of our solar system anymore.

What didn't you like about Solar Walk?

The only downfalls of Solar Walk is the absence of instruction on how to use it.  It's fairly intuitive but it would be nice to have some brief tutorials.  It's also a very large application (32 MB) so it will take up a lot of space on your device.

Where can you purchase Solar Walk?

You can download Solar Walk for free from iTunes.  Don't forget, Solar Walk goes back to it's regular price this Thursday. Review by D.i.D. Doctor of iDevices Sam SchlamiHospital in Atlanta, Georgia
